Waffle maker Black Friday guide 2026
What to check before you buy, what an independent reviewer found, and three models worth comparing.
The bottom line
Do not pay extra for a flip feature on its own: America's Test Kitchen found the heating element and how well the plates hold heat matter more than flipping. Look for depth (a Belgian waffle should be at least an inch tall), even browning and a done signal. Check the price history for the exact model number before you trust a Black Friday discount.
What to look for
Waffle depth
Why it matters: It is what makes a waffle Belgian. America's Test Kitchen says Belgian waffles should be at least an inch tall and classic ones under an inch.
How to check: Look for a reviewer who measured the waffle height, and the grid depth on the maker's page.
Watch out for: A "Belgian" label on a shallow grid. ATK found the GreenPan Elite made Belgian waffles only 3/4 inch tall.
Even browning
Why it matters: ATK's main complaint about weak irons was uneven color, such as dark centers and pale edges.
How to check: Reviews that describe browning edge to edge. ATK looked for average interior heat of 400 to 435 degrees F and cook times of 3 to 4.5 minutes.
Watch out for: Judging by flip action alone. ATK says heating-element layout and plate heat retention matter more. Its Cuisinart Double Flip (WAF-F40) still made waffles it described as pale, undercooked, soggy and splotchy.
Done signal
Why it matters: You should not have to guess when to open it.
How to check: A light, a beep or a timer on the spec list. ATK looked for audible or visual alerts.
Watch out for: No signal at all, or one you cannot hear from across the kitchen.
Handle and drips
Why it matters: Hot batter and steam are a burn risk.
How to check: Reviews that mention handles, condensation and drip trays. ATK noted a drip moat on its top Belgian pick.
Watch out for: ATK found the Presto FlipSide collected condensation in its handle and dripped hot water when flipped. Go slowly if you buy one.
Plates and cleanup
Why it matters: Cleaning is the part people stop doing.
How to check: Whether plates come out and are dishwasher safe (the maker says so for the Krups below), or whether the coating wipes clean.
Watch out for: Removable plates on a model that bakes poorly. Easy cleanup does not make up for a bad waffle.
Size and storage
Why it matters: A small kitchen cannot hold a large machine.
How to check: Dimensions on the maker's page, and whether it stores upright.
Watch out for: Buying a four-waffle machine for one person.
Which waffle maker is right for you
| If you... | Look at |
|---|---|
| Cooking for 1 or 2, short on space | A mini such as the Dash Mini Waffle Maker (4-inch waffle). |
| Want thick Belgian waffles on a budget | The Presto FlipSide. ATK named it its Best Buy and measured waffles nearly 1.4 inches tall. Mind the handle drips. |
| Cooking for a family and hate scrubbing | A four-waffle model with dishwasher-safe plates, such as the Krups GQ502D51. We found no ATK review of it, so check other reviews. |
| Want the top-rated Belgian regardless of price | ATK's Best Belgian winner is the Breville Smart Waffle 4 Slice, which ATK priced at $250 in its review. |

See it on AmazonTraps to avoid
- Judging a flip model by the flip. ATK found the heating element and plate heat retention matter more than flipping. Read the browning results instead.
- "Belgian" on a shallow grid. ATK measured one removable-plate Belgian model at only 3/4 inch. Check depth.
- A fake discount. A crossed-out list price proves nothing. Check the price history for the exact model number.
- A price that only works after a rebate. Confirm whether the advertised price is what you pay at checkout or only after you file paperwork.
Before you check out
- Write down the exact model number and open the maker's page for it.
- Find a review that measured waffle height and described browning.
- Check the price history, and whether the price needs a rebate.
- Confirm the plates are removable and dishwasher safe if cleanup matters to you.
- Read the return policy and keep the box until you have made a few waffles.
How we put this guide together
We don't test waffle makers in a lab. On October 9, 2026 we compared America's Test Kitchen's published waffle iron review with the makers' own product pages, listed below. Where we quote a finding, it is theirs, not ours. Product pages change, so check the maker's page for current specs. We earn a commission on some purchases through our links; that never decides what we recommend. Disclosure
Quick answers
Is a flip waffle maker better than a fixed one?
Not automatically. America's Test Kitchen found that how the heating element is set up and how well the plates hold heat matter more than whether a machine flips or rotates. Judge a model by even browning, depth and how it handles.
What makes a waffle "Belgian"?
Depth. America's Test Kitchen says a Belgian waffle should be at least an inch tall, while a classic waffle is under an inch. Check the waffle height a reviewer measured, not just the word "Belgian" in the listing.
Are removable plates worth it?
They make cleanup easier if the plates are dishwasher safe, as on the Krups GQ502D51 per Krups. They do not guarantee a good waffle: America's Test Kitchen found the removable-plate GreenPan Elite made Belgian waffles only three-quarters of an inch tall.
Do I need a big waffle maker?
Only if you cook for several people. The Dash Mini Waffle Maker makes a 4-inch waffle, and Dash lists it at 1.5 pounds, so it suits one or two people and small spaces.
How do I know a Black Friday price is real?
Look at the price history for that exact model number, and check whether the price is instant or only after a rebate. A crossed-out "list price" tells you nothing if the item never sold at it.
