Amazon Lightning Deals vs Woot daily deals

Woot is an Amazon subsidiary, but the two work differently. Here is how timers, limits, item condition, returns and Prime shipping compare.

The bottom line

Neither one is always cheaper, so compare the final price of the exact model on both. Amazon Lightning Deals are short, limited-stock offers with a 15-minute window to check out once the deal is in your cart. Woot runs one featured deal at a time until midnight Central or until it sells out, and it sells many refurbished and open-box items, so read the condition and warranty before you buy. Prime members get free Standard shipping on Woot.

Reading Woot's condition grades

Woot sells new items, but also open-box and refurbished ones. Woot staff published these definitions. The grade tells you how much wear to expect and who stands behind the warranty.

Factory Reconditioned

Like-new. No visible scratches, dings or dents at arm's length. Done by the maker or a certified partner. Manufacturer or Woot warranty.

Grade A Refurbished

Close to new. No visible scratches, dings or dents at arm's length. Done by a third-party vendor. Vendor or Woot warranty.

Refurbished (Grade B)

A moderate level of wear, including scratches, dents and dings. Third-party vendor. Vendor or Woot warranty.

Refurbished Scratch & Dent (Grade C)

Shows wear, including scratches, dents and dings. Third-party vendor. Vendor or Woot warranty.

New, Open Box

New and never used, but the box was opened to add, remove or replace items. Manufacturer, vendor or Woot warranty.

Open Box on Clearance

Customer returns that tested as fully functional. 30-day Woot warranty only.

Woot also notes that most computer makers start the warranty clock at the time of build or certified refurbishment, and that it resets once the product is purchased and registered. Ask before you assume.

Traps to avoid

  • Missing the cart window. A Lightning Deal price is held for 15 minutes. After that, the regular price applies and the next person on the waitlist is notified.
  • Assuming a deal comes back. Woot says that once a deal expires or sells out, that is that.
  • Buying a Bag of Crap and expecting a return. Woot says there are no returns on them.
  • Ignoring the grade. Grade B and Grade C items show wear. Open Box on Clearance carries only a 30-day Woot warranty.
  • Forgetting return costs. If a Woot item is not damaged or defective, the prepaid return shipping is deducted from your refund, and specialty-carrier items carry a flat $50 return fee.
  • Judging by the percent off. A bigger "percent off" number does not mean a lower final price. Compare the price you would pay for the same model.

Before you check out

  1. Find the exact model number and compare its price on both sites.
  2. On Woot, read the condition grade and who backs the warranty.
  3. Check shipping at checkout. Prime members get free Standard shipping on Woot.
  4. Write down the return deadline (30 days from delivery for most Woot purchases).
  5. On Amazon, finish checkout within 15 minutes of the deal reaching your cart.

How we put this guide together

We don't test products or stores. We read Amazon's help page on Lightning Deals, Woot's FAQ and Woot staff's condition glossary, listed below, on October 9, 2026. We left out discount percentages and claims about how Amazon stocks Woot, because we found no source for them. Policies change, so check the current page before you buy. We earn a commission on some purchases through our links; that never decides what we recommend.

Quick answers

Does Amazon own Woot?

Yes. Woot says it is an independent subsidiary of Amazon. You can still sign in to Woot with your Amazon account.

How long do I have to pay for an Amazon Lightning Deal?

Once the deal is in your cart, the Lightning Deal price is held for 15 minutes. If you do not buy in time, the next customer on the waitlist is notified.

Is shipping free on Woot?

It is free Standard shipping for Prime members. A Woot forum reply says other customers pay $6 per order, so check the cost at checkout.

Can I return Woot items?

Most purchases can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Exceptions include food, hazardous materials and Bags of Crap. If the item is not damaged or defective, Woot deducts the prepaid cost of return shipping from the refund. Items sent by a specialty carrier have a flat $50 return fee.

Which has the bigger discounts, Lightning Deals or Woot?

We could not find a source that says. Discounts depend on the item. Compare the final price of the exact model on both sites, and check the condition on Woot.
