Black Friday Telescope Deals 2026: Beginner Telescopes on Amazon
A computerized telescope that finds planets for you, and two Celestrons that use your phone to point the way. What Space.com's reviewers found, and when to buy.
The bottom line
Space.com names the Celestron NexStar 4SE its best telescope for beginners: quick to set up, with GoTo tracking and sharp views of the moon and planets. Space.com found it at $649 on Amazon in June 2026, about $100 off, so watch for a drop toward that. For deep-sky objects like galaxies and nebulas, Space.com found the smartphone-guided StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ located everything it tried, with impressively sharp views (sold by Amazon). The refractor DX 102AZ is the easier-care option.
Telescopes to watch this Black Friday
Celestron NexStar 4SE Computerized Telescope
Best for: The moon and planets, with the telescope finding targets for you
$749.00 on Amazon (checked Oct 30)
Why
- Space.com's best telescope for beginners, rated four stars: quick setup, a sturdy build and GoTo technology
- A 4-inch Maksutov-Cassegrain that gave crisp, detailed views of the moon and planets in Space.com's review
- Space.com found it at $649 on Amazon in June 2026
Watch out
- Narrow field of view (about 1.2 degrees), so galaxies and nebulas were less impressive, per Space.com
- No batteries included, and it drained 8 AAs quickly; Space.com recommends an external power supply
- About 8 kg and the tripod doesn't fold small; sold on Amazon by Focus Camera, not Amazon
Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ
Best for: Galaxies, nebulas and planets, guided by your phone
$499.95 on Amazon (checked Oct 30)
Why
- In Space.com's review, the StarSense app found every galaxy and nebula it tried, always within the low-power view
- Andromeda, the Orion Nebula and other targets looked impressively sharp and contrasty through its 130 mm (5.1-inch) mirror
- Lightweight and portable for its size, per Space.com; sold by Amazon itself
Watch out
- As a reflector it needs its mirrors collimated (aligned), which Space.com says is easy with the instructions but important
- Space.com suggests aligning the finder in daylight to avoid fiddling in the dark
Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 102AZ
Best for: A low-maintenance refractor with phone guidance
$439.99 on Amazon (checked Oct 30)
10% under Amazon's list price of $489.95
Why
- Space.com calls it an excellent kit for those just starting out, an all-inclusive package that's easy to use
- A 102 mm refractor that uses a lens instead of mirrors, with a short tube for a wide field of view and bright images, per Space.com
- Space.com found the StarSense app easy and intuitive
Watch out
- The phone dock mirror can dew up within minutes, and the finding system isn't always spot-on, per Space.com
- Not every phone works; check Celestron's compatibility list first
Prices come from Amazon and are checked three times a day. Amazon's price at checkout is the one that counts.
Which one is right for you
| If you... | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want the moon, Saturn and Jupiter with the least effort | NexStar 4SE | GoTo finds them for you, and Space.com rates it the best beginner telescope. |
| Want to see galaxies and nebulas | StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ | The larger 130 mm mirror and phone guidance found every deep-sky target in Space.com's test. |
| Want phone guidance without mirror upkeep | StarSense Explorer DX 102AZ | A refractor needs no collimation and gives a wide, bright view. |
What a good telescope price looks like
Space.com found the NexStar 4SE at $649 on Amazon in June 2026, $100 under its usual $749 price. Compare the live prices on this page with that before you buy.
The discounts we've seen on these models are $50 to $100: $100 off the 4SE in June and about $50 off the DX 102AZ in October. Treat a price near those as a fair deal.
GoTo or phone guidance
The NexStar 4SE has a motorized GoTo mount with Celestron's SkyAlign setup; once aligned, Space.com's reviewer told the hand controller to go to Jupiter and it did. Space.com found it family-friendly, but power-hungry.
The StarSense Explorers have manual mounts. Your phone sits in a dock, the app works out where the telescope is pointing from the stars it sees, and arrows on screen tell you which way to push. No batteries for the mount, but you need a compatible phone.
Planets or deep sky
The 4SE's long focal length gives sharp, magnified views of the moon and planets but a narrow field, so faint, large objects like galaxies were less thrilling in Space.com's review. The DX 130AZ's bigger mirror gathers more light for galaxies and nebulas.
Space.com notes smartphone photos through an eyepiece are hit or miss; serious astrophotography needs more equipment.
Before you check out
- Decide what you most want to see: planets (4SE) or galaxies and nebulas (DX 130AZ).
- For a StarSense model, check your phone is on Celestron's compatible list.
- For the 4SE, budget for batteries or a power supply.
- Check the seller; the 4SE is sold by a camera store on Amazon.
- Plan where you'll store and carry it.
How we put this guide together
We don't test telescopes. The picks come from Space.com's reviews of the Celestron NexStar 4SE (updated January 27, 2023), StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ and DX 102AZ, and its June 2026 note naming the 4SE its best beginner telescope. Today's prices come from Amazon and are checked three times a day. We earn a commission if you buy through our Amazon links, which doesn't change the price you pay.
